CHEMICALS

Sodium Sulphate.jpg

Sodium Sulphate

Sodium sulfate (also known as sodium sulphate or sulfate of soda) is the inorganic compound with formula Na2SO4 as well as several related hydrates. All forms are white solids that are highly soluble in water.

Sodium sulfate is mainly used for the manufacture of detergents and in the Kraft process of paper pulping, although it has many other uses. About half of the world's production is from the natural mineral form of the decahydrate (mirabilite), and half from by-products of chemical processes. It is mainly used as a filler in the manufacture of powdered home laundry detergents and in the Kraft process of paper pulping for making highly alkaline sulfides.

Applications :

  • The largest use is as filler in powdered home laundry detergents

  • Used in the Kraft process for the manufacture of wood pulp

  • Sodium sulfate is used as a fining agent in glass industry, to help remove small air bubbles from molten glass. It fluxes the glass and prevents scum formation of the glass melt during refining.

  • Sodium sulfate is added to increase the ionic strength of the solution and so helps in "levelling", reducing negative electrical charges on textile fibers so that dyes can penetrate evenly in textile industry

  • In the laboratory, anhydrous sodium sulfate is widely used as an inert drying agent, for removing traces of water from organic solutions

Safety : Although sodium sulfate is generally regarded as non-toxic, it should be handled with care. The dust can cause temporary asthma or eye irritation; this risk can be prevented by using eye protection and a paper mask. Transport is not limited, and no Risk Phrase or Safety Phrase applies.

Aluminium Sulphate.jpg

Aluminium Sulphate

Aluminium sulphate (Al2 (SO4)3) is a chemical compound that is soluble in water. The compound is mainly used as a coagulant during the water purification process, wastewater treatment, and paper manufacturing.

Aluminium sulfate is also called Filter Alum or Dialuminum trisulfate. It is a white crystalline solid in its anhydrous form and in its solution form it appears as a colourless liquid. Both the forms are non-toxic and non-combustible.

Aluminium sulfate is soluble in water but insoluble in ethanol. It is odourless and has a mildly astringent taste, sweet taste. On decomposing, it emits toxic fumes of sulphur oxides. The solution of aluminium sulfate is corrosive to aluminium. This compound is produced in the laboratory by adding aluminium hydroxide, to sulphuric acid.

Application :

  • It is used in baking soda

  • It is used for gardening to balance the soil PH

  • Used in the purification of water

  • It is used in the dyeing of cloth

  • It is used in making paper

  • Used for the printing on cloth

  • It is used in concrete as an accelerator and waterproofing agent

  • It is used in firefighting foam

  • It is used in sewage treatment

  • It is used as the fireproofing agent

Safety : Aluminium sulfate is an irritant to the skin and eyes, so you should wear gloves and eye protection while dealing with it. It is mildly dangerous if aluminium sulfate is swallowed in any way because when the salt is swallowed it can form extremely corrosive sulphuric acid.

Caustic Soda.jpg

Caustic Soda

Caustic soda, chemically called Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH), is a colorless, viscous, corrosive liquid. It is a by-product in the production of chlorine.

Caustic soda is a basic product that is widely used in a diverse range of industrial sectors, either as a raw material or as an auxiliary chemical. It is generally sold in two forms: as lye, with various concentrations (usually in the 30-32% & 49-50% range), and as solid caustic soda in the form of flakes or granules.

Caustic Soda is a basic product very widely used in diverse industrial sectors, either as a raw material or as an auxiliary chemical. As mentioned earlier, it is produced along with chlorine.

Caustic soda is one of the basic building blocks of chemistry and as such it finds diversified applications. A few of the broad use categories are :

- Manufacture of pulp and paper

- newsprint

- Manufacture of viscose yarn

- Manufacture of staple fiber

- Manufacture of Aluminium

- Manufacture of cotton

- Manufacture of textiles

- Manufacture of toilet and laundry soaps

- Manufacture of detergents

- Manufacture of dyestuffs

- Manufacture of drugs and pharmaceuticals

- vanaspati

- Petroleum refining

- Water treatment

- Food Processing

Three technologies are available world over for production of caustic soda – mercury cell process, diaphragm process, and membrane cell process. All three processes are in use in India, although there is strong trend indicating a shift towards the environmentally better membrane cell process. We manufacture Caustic soda through more environmentally friendly membrane technology.

Safety :

  • This material is a Scheduled Poison S6 and must be stored, maintained and used in accordance with the relevant regulations.

  •  Precautions for safe handling: Avoid skin and eye contact and breathing in vapour, mists and aerosols.

  •  Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

  •  Store in cool place and out of direct sunlight.

  •  Store away from incompatible materials described in Section 10.

  •  Store away from foodstuffs.

  • Do not store in aluminium or galvanised containers nor use die-cast zinc or aluminium bungs; plastic bungs should be used.

  •  At temperatures greater than 40°C, tanks must be stress relieved. Keep containers closed when not in use - check regularly for leaks
